Heating & Cooling in One System
Heat Pump Installation
One system that heats in a cold snap and cools all summer — sized with a Manual J load calculation and installed by licensed HVAC and electrical technicians from the same company. Heil Elite & Trane Authorized Dealer. Open 7 days a week.
Licensed TACLA914 Why Installation Matters
Residential Heat Pump Installation, Sized and Wired Right
A heat pump moves heat instead of making it. In summer it pulls warm air out of your home; in winter it pulls heat from the outside air and brings it inside. One system handles both — but only if it is sized, wired and placed correctly.
An oversized unit short-cycles and wears out early. An undersized one can't keep up with the load. Most heat pumps also need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and an older panel may not have room for it. That's three trades — HVAC, electrical and building envelope — in one job. On The Way holds the HVAC (TACLA914) and electrical (TECL34051) licenses and does blown-in insulation, so one crew answers for all of it.
- Manual J load calculation before any equipment is chosen
- Panel capacity and 240V dedicated circuit checked by our own licensed electricians
- Ductwork inspected — sealed, cleaned or resized where needed
- Permits pulled and inspections handled

Step by Step
Our Heat Pump Installation Process
Installing a heat pump is more than swapping equipment. Here is what happens from the first visit to the final test. A standard home usually takes one to two days.
1. Site Evaluation
We measure the home and look at the ductwork, the electrical panel, insulation and airflow, and where the indoor and outdoor units can go — so the system fits the house and meets local code.
2. Sizing & Equipment
A Manual J load calculation accounts for square footage, insulation, windows and orientation. Then we choose single- or multi-zone, ducted or ductless, and ENERGY STAR® rated equipment from Heil or Trane.
3. Electrical & Permits
Permits are pulled before work starts. Our licensed electricians confirm the panel can carry the load and run the dedicated, grounded circuit the unit needs — or upgrade the panel if it can't.
4. Installation Day
We mount the indoor and outdoor units, connect refrigerant lines, power and drainage, install or modify ductwork if needed, and set up the thermostat.
5. Charge & Test
Refrigerant lines are leak-tested and charged, then we test the whole system: temperature controls, refrigerant pressure and airflow, in both heating and cooling.
6. Final Inspection
Outdoor-unit clearance, refrigerant line insulation and drain line slope are checked against code, and the permit is closed out. Then the system is yours.
Before We Install
Heat Pump Installation Requirements
Skip one of these and you get a system that fails early, a safety hazard or a failed inspection. We check every one before the install starts.
Sizing & Load Calculation
The heat pump has to match the home's heating and cooling load. A Manual J calculation takes insulation, square footage, windows and orientation into account.
Electrical Requirements
Most heat pumps need a dedicated 240-volt circuit with proper grounding, and the panel must have capacity for the added load. If it doesn't, the panel is upgraded — by our own licensed electricians.
Ductwork
For a ducted heat pump, the ducts must be sealed, clean and sized for the new system. Older homes often need duct upgrades; ductless mini-splits skip this step.
Code Compliance
Clearance around the outdoor unit, electrical safety, insulated refrigerant lines and a correctly sloped drain line with a proper outlet.
Permits & Inspection
Permits keep the install safe and legal. We pull them before work starts and handle the inspection when it's done.
Get More From It
Make Your New Heat Pump Work Less
Getting the system in is half the job. These are the things that decide how hard it has to work for as long as you own it — and we can handle the first one before the unit goes in.
Insulate Before You Install
A well-insulated attic lowers the load your heat pump has to carry, so it heats and cools faster for less. We do blown-in attic insulation, and it can change the size of system you need.
Keep It Maintained
Filter changes, coil cleaning and a check-up twice a year keep a heat pump at full capacity — once before cooling season and once before heating season.
Use a Smart Thermostat
Temperature schedules avoid overuse, and many heat pumps run better paired with a thermostat that learns your patterns.
Seal the Leaks
Air leaks at windows, doors and the attic hatch cancel out the gains of a high-efficiency system. Seal them and the system you paid for does its job.
Homes & Businesses
Commercial Heat Pump Installation
Heat pumps aren't only for homes. We install them for offices, retail stores, restaurants, medical facilities and warehouses — consistent temperatures, lower monthly energy use, quiet operation and a small equipment footprint. Zoning lets different rooms or sections run at different temperatures.
- Offices, retail, restaurants, medical & warehouse
- Zoned systems for separate areas
- Same Manual J sizing and permitting as every residential job
