The name is French for "the mark" — it was given in the 1890s by a French postmistress, replacing the earlier names Highlands and, briefly, Buttermilk Station.
The town as it stands today is mostly a product of the 1950s, when industrial growth next door drove a housing boom. Roughly eighteen thousand people live here now, and most of the city is served by Texas City ISD, which absorbed the former La Marque district in 2016.
