Hitchcock sits in Galveston County between Santa Fe, La Marque and the bay. It started as a railroad station in 1873 and spent the early twentieth century as a vegetable shipping point, went quiet in the thirties, then revived during the Second World War when Camp Wallace and Naval Air Station Hitchcock brought people and money in. The city itself was established in 1960.
Today it is home to roughly seven thousand people across a very large footprint — ninety-two square miles, about a third of it water. Most of the city is served by Hitchcock ISD, with some areas in Santa Fe ISD, and College of the Mainland is just up the road in Texas City.
Since 1984 Hitchcock has hosted the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo at Jack Brooks Park, which is as good a marker as any of what kind of place it is: a county town with real acreage around it rather than a subdivision grid.
