Bacliff is an unincorporated community in Galveston County on the western shore of Galveston Bay, about ten miles northwest of Galveston, sitting between Kemah to the north and San Leon to the south. Together with San Leon and Bayview it makes up the largest unincorporated community in mainland Galveston County — close to ten thousand people live here, which surprises people who assume "unincorporated" means small.
It was founded in 1910 as a seaside resort called Clifton-by-the-Sea. The current name came from a clerical error: "Bay Cliff" was misspelled on postal paperwork, and Bacliff stuck when the community was renamed in 1948. Industry along the bay after the Second World War turned the resort into a place where people actually live, mostly commuting elsewhere for work.
Because Bacliff has no city government of its own, it sits across two school districts — Dickinson ISD to the south and Clear Creek ISD to the north — and it occasionally falls through the cracks with contractors who only work by city name.
